Quick answer: Each armor piece has a level x 15% chance to reflect 1-4 damage back to an attacker that hits you. Multiple pieces raise the chance that at least one procs, but only one piece deals damage per hit in Java.

- Enchanted books from loot, fishing and librarian villagers
- Combine in an anvil
Best uses
Situational: it punishes melee attackers but drains armor durability fast. Many players keep it off their main set and put it on a spare set instead.
