Quick answer: XP orbs you collect repair the equipped item (2 durability per XP point) instead of filling your XP bar. Items in hand, off-hand and worn armor can be repaired.

How to get Mending
- Treasure enchantment - NOT available from the enchanting table
- Librarian villagers (any biome) selling enchanted books
- Loot chests, fishing, raids (Bedrock), pillager outposts
Best uses
Your most valuable gear: netherite tools and armor, elytra, trident, bow. Combine with Unbreaking III.
Incompatible with
Infinity (on bows - choose one) - an item can only hold one of these.
