Step by step

Prepare: bring wool blocks and a hoe (sculk breaks fastest with a hoe), night vision potions, food, and avoid armor that makes noise - or full enchanted gear if you plan to fight.
Head deep: ancient cities appear around Y=-51 in the Deep Dark. Mountainous areas (jagged peaks, plateaus) are the most reliable surface clue.
Identify the Deep Dark: sculk blocks, sculk veins, sensors and shriekers mark the biome. No hostile mobs spawn naturally here.
Move slowly: crouch (sneak) everywhere - sneaking creates no vibrations. Place wool to walk on, since wool blocks and carpets absorb vibrations.
Break or block sculk shriekers before triggering them 4 times: the fourth shriek summons the Warden.
